Still Working
Hi folks.
Just wanted to take a moment to give a quick update on the state of my writing existence.
2018 has been…well, it’s been a bad year, writing-wise. I started out doing pretty well. Made a bunch of good progress on Warfare Qualified, the first of my planned Space Navy series. And I wrote of bunch of shorter stories going into the Anthology Workshop I attended back in February. Tell you what, I came back from that workshop pumped to continue and do even better.
And then real life hit. Last year my wife served me with divorce papers, but most of the year went by without much of any movement in that area. But in February we officially did the moving out to an apartment bit (we’re doing the birds nest custody thing where the kids stay in the house but we bounce back and forth during our custody weeks – that minimizes stress and upheaval for them), and began the true work of negotiating out a settlement.
That was rough. Mostly amicable, but rough.
Well, we’re finally at the end of that process, but that cast my focus awry for many months, as you can imagine.
I spent the last couple weeks away at a writing business workshop and then a business meeting followed by my 25 year High School reunion. Since coming back from that trip, it’s like a switch has been thrown in my head. Somehow the distraction and overall sense of “Ah to hell with it” has faded and I’m actually pumped to get back to the business of writing again. And it’s shown in output. I’ve not been getting tremendous word counts out, but I’ve been getting consistent word counts out. And like a guy at the workshop said, the only bad day is a day I don’t get any writing in.
As long as I write something, it’s a good day for the business.
So that’s the mantra I’m going forward with. I thought about doing NaNoWriMo this year, but I’ve decided not to. My only plan is to write at least a little, each day going forward from here. Let’s say at least 250 words – 1 page. That takes me maybe ten minutes.
It’s not much, but in the end that will net a whole lot more words than I have been getting the last several months.
So yes, I’m still working. Making slow progress on Warfare Qualified. I expect that progress to increase as I get back into my groove again, and hopefully it will be ready to go early next year.
