The Beast And The God-Woman
Yili never questioned the Gods’ decrees, as handed down to the people from the elders. Do not tarry long on the beach, for there lurks the Beast. Do not venture beyond the breakers, for the sea holds nothing but death and man lives on the island alone.
Until the day a strange object approached the island, borne by the wind and waves toward Yili’s home until it broke apart on the reef and deposited a woman and a man, who could only be Gods themselves, onto the beach. The Beast wants to destroy them. The elders distrust them. And Yili finds himself helplessly drawn to the God-Woman, at the risk of all he knows and loves.
Larian’s comrade-in-arms and friend, Jiles, received a family heirloom in the mail: a pendant from his deceased grandfather. Then he lost it during a night of liberty in Mirasol, a town near their Company’s camp.
Larian agrees to help Jiles find his lost heirloom. Their search brings them into the heart of Mirasol’s underworld, where they encounter dangers they did not expect during a simple night of liberty.
So You Want To Be A Dragon Slayer…
82 Light Years away on Alcor Five, great flying beasts called Reptus Volans, which closely resemble the dragons of European legend, sit at the top of the food chain. They are so dangerous and exist in such great numbers that the Colonial Allocation Committee forbad colonization of Alcor Five by humans. Thus the planet went untouched and largely ignored until entrepreneurs formed Dragon Safaris, Inc. Using state of the art space portal technology, Dragon Safaris transports hunters and adventurers, along with specially trained guides, to Alcor Five. There they do battle with the great beasts, seeking to earn the title Dragon Slayer. When I saw Dragon Safaris’ commercial on late night television, it rekindled the sense of magic and adventure I used to have when I was younger. I could not resist. I needed to go on this journey and pit myself against these dragons. I convinced my two oldest friends, Vinnie and Carl, to come along. This is our story.
Piter’s honeymoon was off to a splendid start. He and his bride had a fancy bridal suite on a luxury spaceliner and their own private view of the most beautiful aurora in the known galaxy. Then it all went to hell. Narrowly escaping the spaceliner’s destruction in a cargo shuttle, he, his bride, and five others crash onto an un-colonized moon, where they have to figure out how to survive until the rescue comes.
Assuming it ever does.
Passing in the Night
A year-long shift in the middle of the interstellar void can get pretty boring. For the Fourth shift crew of the starliner Pericles, enroute to Earth from one of the colony worlds, the passage could best be called routine.
Until the forward sensors detect an unknown and unexpected object ahead. What they find there, in the endless night of space, will forever change the universe, for them and for all mankind.
Passing In The Night earned an Honorable Mention from the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future contest for the second quarter of 2011.
